Following recent research into the well-being benefits of living in almshouse communities, a grantee of The Albert Hunt Trust, The Almshouse Association, has been commissioning research with Bayes Business School, London, to find out whether almshouses have an effect on the longevity of residents. Previous research has shown that ‘community spirit’ and the companionship found in many almshouse communities can lead to a greater sense of well-being – but does this model actually extend life?

The final Report is a “snapshot”, but, in its initial stages, the results are proving promising and despite existing for over a thousand years, this community housing model seems to be relevant today.

This Report could help raise awareness of almshouses and lead to further in-depth research and may encourage more external support for the building of additional almshouse communities throughout the UK.
